Incredible bag at any price point…a must have at this one!

I can’t say enough good things about this line from Samsonite! Since purchasing them a year ago to replace my older luggage I’ve taken them all over Brazil, all over Argentina, Singapore a dozen times, Bangkok at least once a month for the last 2 years, Ho Chi Min, all over Cambodia, and of course on trips around the US.

which I thought was great for storing in a dusty garage

Pros:

One of the best sets of luggage available in this price category…and substantially better than most in any price range!

This is the 3rd set of these bags I’ve purchased. I own 2 full sets myself and just bought the purple set for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift…her luggage was falling apart on us when we were traveling so she always used one of my sets anyway.

Worthless warranty and poor quality

Beware what you think is a warranty from Samsonite. We purchased this set specifically for an international trip and had to return the first set for a replacement due to a faulty zipper. This should have been a red flag, but we were running short on time before we were scheduled to leave. Kudos to amazon for expediting a replacement set. The replacement set pieces (we only took the larger two pieces on the trip) both experienced a new problem with the tubing that makes up the retractable handle assembly. Each piece on different legs of the flights was damaged (Dented tubing from both internal and external directions) to the point where the handle assembly would not extend until we physically bent the tubes back into shape. No external damage was evident. An older, similar model of samsonite made the trip without any similar ill effects. I can only chalk this up to the decreased quality of materials used for the handle assemblies in this newer model of their luggage. The quest for lighter weight should not trump durability. Samsonite’s warranty (as well as most if not all other manufacturers warranties) expressly disclaim any incidental or consequential damages. What this means to you is that the won’t fix anything that happens to the luggage while in use. So ask yourselves, when is a problem likely to manifest itself? While the luggage is in use. Their advice is to file a claim with the airlines. This is certainly possible but also a little impractical to do in the airport when you are trying to make connections. So even if we had made the claims we would have had to repair luggage which is very likely to simply be damaged in the same fashion on the next outing. I do believe this luggage has been constructed to cheaply to justify the 300 price tag. I also believe it fails the warranty of fitness for a particular purpose (merchantability) but good luck proving that in court. I’ll be reinforcing the interior of my pieces to try and prevent future problems, but if you want to avoid doing likewise steer clear of this beautiful purple luggage.
